North Albania: Hiking the Albanian Alps

Program:

Day 1: Arrival

Flight to Tirana and transfer to Shkodra.

Day 2: Drin Gorge

On a ferry trip from Koman to Fierze, we will love the romantic Drin Gorge with its steep limestone cliffs (a transfer may be necessary due to weather). Then drive to Valbona Valley. This valley, as Albanians say, is the most beautiful in Albania. Many girls are named after him. We hike to the high mountain pastures Grykat and Hapta (hike duration: approx. 2.5 hours; +/- 370 m) before leaving for Valbona.

Day 3: View of Mount Jezerca

We climb a shepherd's path to a viewpoint at 1,700 m (hike duration: approx. 6 hours, +/- 760 m), from where we can enjoy a magnificent view of the highest peaks of the Albanian Alps: Mt. Jezerca (2,695 m) and Mount Rosi (2,522 m).

Day 4: To Thethi

Today we go up to the Valbona pass (1,860 m). Our luggage is transported by horses. We will then descend to Thethi (hike duration: approximately 7 hours, + 900 m, - 1150 m), a rustic mountain village in the Albanian Alps.

Day 5: Free day

Today you can take a break and simply enjoy the beautiful nature or explore the surroundings on your own. Today you will prepare your own dinner during a cooking class together.

Day 6: Thethi to Nderlysaj

On a circular walk (walk duration: approximately 5 hours, +/- 350 m) we learn about the natural beauty surrounding Thethi. Then we headed to Nderlysaj. In the afternoon we cool off in the town's water pools (1 night).

Day 7: Thore Pass

We walk through the beautiful and wild Kaprea Valley to the Thore Pass (1,700 m). The Albanian Alps are once again shown in all their splendor (hike duration: approx. 4 hours, + 1300 m, - 130 m). Then a bus picks us up and takes us back to Tirana via Shkodra.

Day 8: Return Trip

Transfer to the airport and return flight.

South Albania: Cultural Treasures & Coastal Beauty

Program:

Day 1: Arrival Tirana - Durres

Flight to Tirana and transfer to our hotel in Durres. Half board included.

Day 2: Durrës - Berat - Apollonia - Vlora

In the morning, visit Durres and continue to Berat. The city of 1,000 windows - as Berat is also called - and its fortress, which is still inhabited today, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then continue to the excavations of Apollonia. Over 2,500 years ago, the Greeks built a colony here in honor of Apollo. After the visit we continue to our hotel in Vlora. Half board included.

Day 3: Vlora - Llogara National Park - Saranda

Today we leave Vlora and drive along the picturesque coastal road along the Albanian Riviera. Unique nature awaits us in the Llogara National Park. Next stop is Himara - a true jewel of southern Albania. On the peninsula of Porto Palermo we make a photo stop to photograph the massive, triangular fort of Ali Pasha. Continue to the hotel in Saranda. Half board included.

Day 4: Saranda – Butrint – Ksamil – Blue Eye – Gjirokaster

Visit to Butrint – UNESCO World Heritage Site. A large number of ancient buildings were discovered here during excavations. Parts of this are still surprisingly well preserved. Continue to Ksamil. On our way to Gjirokaster we see the "Blue Eye". Hotel in Gjirokaster. Half board included.

Day 5: Gjirokaster – Korca

Morning visit to Gjirokastra, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also called the "City of Stones", we visit the fortress and if you feel like it, you can also visit the only weapons museum in Albania. Then continue through the mountains of Albania to Korca, where we check into our hotel. Half board included.

Day 6: Korca – Ohrid

In the morning we visit Korca, then our route leads to the North Macedonian border and the famous Lake Ohrid. The lake is the oldest and deepest lake in Europe. The city and the lake are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way to the UNESCO city we visit the monastery of Sv. Naum, embedded in unique nature. Not only is the monastery located here, but also the sources of Lake Ohrid, which we explore on a rowing boat trip. Then drive to our hotel in Ohrid. Half board included.

Day 7: Ohrid – Elbasan – Tirana

We start our day with a short boat trip on Lake Ohrid and take in the flair of the city from the water. Afterwards we explore the city on foot. In the afternoon we return to Albania, along the old Roman road "Via Egnatia" we reach the city of Elbasan. After a short sightseeing we continue to our hotel in Tirana. Half board included.

Day 8: Tirana - Kruja - Tirana

Drive to Kruje, the city of the national hero Skanderbek. We see the impressive fortress and the old town with the oriental-looking bazaar. Then continue to Tirana. Detailed tour of the city, we see, among other things, Skanderbek Square with its magnificent Italian buildings and the former official residence of Envher Hoxha. In the evening we move into our hotel in Tirana. Half board included.

Day 9: Departure

Transfer to Tirana airport.
